Battle for hearts and mimes

A double shot of scotch, straight, and a few minutes of padding around on the ceramic tile in my bare feet bring more questions than answers.

PollingReport is an amalgam of polls taken by CNN, ABC, CBS and USA Today. It shows sentiment about Iraq swings back and forth, in accordance with unseen political programming directors.

What makes us think an American presence in Iraq will be successful within a couple of years when the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been continuous since 1918? Then, there's something else.

Occupying forces must commit to a grisly task to win against insurgency. The basic instruction is found in Military Operations 101, which shows the method for controlling the general population where insurgents hide. Control is achieved by simply picking 20 people at random, then shoot them.

Reason being, the population knows who has the guns, who wants to fight, who left for battle and what they're driving.

If the insurgents continue, pick 30 or 40 more, kill them without hesitation. Over time, they toe the line. The US has two problems with this.

We can't do it because we don't have the political will, neither do we want the world's condemnation. Second, the terrorists are doing it instead.

We're teaching their police to counter the terrorists by running a kinder and gentler democracy. Which do you think Iraqi's will go for in the end, our kindness or staying alive?

And, there's one more thing I haven't fathomed yet. Literally, tens of thousands of iraqi's have been killed by the hands of Muslims. Perhaps thousands were tortured. All without any protest in the streets. Anywhere. The silence is deafening.
