Everybody smile
It's 1998. Put a team together consisting of number crunching scientists. They write a program that creates a constant stream of random numbers.
The scientists see patterns in the randomly generated results; visiting scientists investigate, make their critique and recommendations. Our team makes the changes and runs the program every day for 7 years.
This ongoing experiment is still running day and night because they found something interesting.
Every time there is a major event, the pattern changes. Bombings, earthquakes, tsunami's. September 11. Anything that captures the attention of large numbers of people has a subtle effect on the random pattern of numbers. But that alone isn't science.
Science is the ability to control the variables and create conditions for a predictive outcome. Valid research can be replicated by others, with predictable results.
The criteria appear to have been met in this open experiment. They successfully predict changes in the pattern for upcoming major events such as a papal visit, the new years eve celebration or world cup soccer. And, this experiment is replicated on 65 computers around the world.
Mind you, the Global Consciousness Project states there is no proof of a Global Consciousness. But the data is intriguing enough to keep them hooked year after year.
