Reality check

Back when I was a young'un, the nuns scowled and waved a one-inch thick catechism book at the Sunday school class. As they handed each of us a copy, we were advised in no uncertain terms that we would have to memorize the contents.

Back then, catechism didn't make much sense to me. Still doesn't.

That progressed over the years into questioning the literal translation of the New Testament. I see it as humans making sense of their day, post-crucifixion spin doctors reading the eyes of the crowd.

Although I am surprised at the find of ossuaries bearing the constellation of names associated with Jesus, I wouldn't be surprised if it were the real thing. My belief allows for centuries of human error, genuine and contrived. Believing Christ physically ascended to heaven is as troublesome as walking on water. I don't need to believe Christ performed miracles. If his bones are still lying in Jerusalem, that's okay.

Already, priests are writing next Sunday's sermon while fellow Christians are bristling at this violation of dogmatic belief. However it turns out, its nice to move from the story of a bimbo's burial to one with meaning.
