Hydrogenated communities
The less astute comedians like to throw in a joke about hydrogen cars going nuclear in the parking lot. Some communities decided these comedians should go nuclear instead. Yakushima and Iceland are well on their way in establishing a hydrogen economy. H2PIA in Denmark is a group of 5 corporations looking for investors and a site to build the first hydrogen city.
Allowing for site feasibility studies, H2PIA has scheduled construction to start in 2007. The ambitious effort will include homes that are not plugged into the energy grid; they will manage their own production and storage of H2 for energy and vehicles. Others will have some combination of energy resources.
Included also are environmentally conscious plans for offices and shopping. A central power plant will be based on hydrogen fuel cells; the site will also produce, store and distribute hydrogen for a variety of purposes.
