Serbia on a dull afternoon
Ratko Dankovic likes to sharpen his wit with a bottle of 60 proof homemade Rakia. That gets him into arguments with his buddies.
A coupla days ago, Ratko is watchin' television. In a head bobbing stupor, he takes interest in a magicians sword swallowing act. Operating under the premise that everything seen should be believed, he tries to convince his fellow drinkers drunks that he can do the same.
Somebody reaches into their pocket and slaps a $20 bill on the table. Game on.
Ratko disappears into the kitchen for a while, comes back and weaves throught the cigarette smoke into a corner of the room. Somehow he manages to swallow 8 nails, 2 spoons, a couple of clothes pegs and a knife with an 8 inch blade.
Eventually, he flips the circuit breaker in his cerebral cortex and passes out.
About 30 minutes later, a car careens up to the entrance of the hospital in Uzice, the doors fly open and drunks start helping each other out of the car and into the hospital. One of them, luckily, is Ratko.
The $20 is spent on the x-ray you see here and a 5 hour operation.
