Bait and switch
A couple of weeks ago, Mike Rhodes is walking along the sidewalk through Courthouse Park in Fresno, when he notices a sweet young thing working the crowd. Her wholesome good looks and attractiveness has a curious affect on his angular momentum, causing him to veer toward her table. She turns to him, smiles and says, "Would you sign our petition to legalize marijuana?"
Babe? Marijuana? Mikey reaches for the pen and says, "Where do I sign?".
Though he is drawn into the situation, Mike keeps his wits. She asks him for his ID and starts to fill out an official looking form. After a minute, she says, "Can I register you as a Republican?"
For reasons we won't explore, Mike is taken aback by this affront to his political values. That doesn't matter to her, she still wants him to re-register as a Republican. There's some cordial back and forth, including something about her getting 10 cents for everyone she signs up.
Our man in the street presses the issue, looking for explanation. Eventually, the sweet young thing admits there is no ballot initiative to legalize marijuana. She's a salaried employee of the local Republican Party. And, no he can't have copy of the marijuana petition.
Mike follows up by talking to Victor Salazar, Fresno County Clerk, who recommends that Mike call the Secretary of State fraud unit.
The next day Mike notices the setup working again and stands by to watch for a while. Suits who walk by are asked if they're registered to vote. Latinos and college aged kids are asked if they want to legalize marijuana.
Let's make some history
How about a new Robin Williams film? How 'bout Robin Williams playing Jon Stewart in a film?
Now, suppose he runs for President and wins? Here's the trailer for "Man of the Year".
