More powerful than lightning

Just when you think you've seen or experianced most of the big stuff around the earth, along comes something new. We've known about this for years, but only recently began serious study. Pilots used to be afraid to report it until several aircraft crashes made scientists take a closer look. Lightning can occur over 50 miles above storms; these days they're referred to as sprites and are usually photographed by astronauts.
