Thinking out of the box
Females who prefer to avoid the usual delivery system for their sperm now have an alternative. For this, ya'll can thank Professor Karim Nayernia and his team of postgraduate zygotes at Georg-August University in Germany.
They pick through a dish of stem cells from a mouse, looking for cells beginning to develop as sperm. With some cajoling, they encourage these to grow into adult sperm cells and inject them into mouse eggs.
If ya didn't know mice had eggs, go talk to your mommy.
Anyways, the fertilized eggs produced seven babies so far, six of them survived into adulthood. But, the researchers still have a little work to do.
These adult mice had problems with walking and weight. Sounds pretty much like a common problem these days; but the researchers think they can tweak one thing or another to solve the problem.
For gals who prefer the centuries old method of fluid dynamics, Dr. Nayernia believes these newfangled stem-sperm cells can be injected into the male's anatomy for delivery.
Yah, jam a needle into the 'ol... just before .... That'll work just great.
